Beloit College Powerhouse

The Powerhouse is one of the most recognized adaptive reuse projects in the country. Angus-Young served as associate architect alongside prime architect Studio Gang, transforming the historic Blackhawk Generating Station on the Rock River into a 120,000-square-foot student union and recreation center for Beloit College. The $37.5 million facility opened in February 2020, connecting the campus to the riverfront through a pedestrian bridge and a soaring 55-foot atrium where original industrial structure meets modern design.
The program includes a 25-yard competition pool, 175-meter running track, fieldhouse, fitness center, 150-seat lecture and movie theater, student lounges, coffee shop, and multiple green roofs. A radiant system draws water directly from the Rock River to heat and cool the structure, contributing to its LEED Silver certification. Original industrial equipment and infrastructure were preserved throughout, keeping the building’s history visible while giving it an entirely new purpose.
