Client: Messiah Lutheran Church
Location: Madison, WI
Scope: 7,355 sf addition and 5,474 sf renovation
This 12,900 square foot addition and renovation included a new gathering space, sanctuary, and offices on the first level; and a new kitchen and fellowship hall on the lower level. We approached this project knowing the importance of preserving the history of the existing, with a need to reflect the modern image and attitude of today’s congregation.
The design was driven by the simple concepts of the original 1960’s modern design, the overall image and modern expression of “church”, and forms that are simplistic and pure. The exterior image was created using modern materials and proportions. One major goal was to create a “church” presence to the street that the existing church lacked. Inside, we stressed for natural materials, simple details, and expressed structure, with large amounts of natural light, creating a comfortable, yet flexible space that maintained the feeling the congregation members experienced in the old sanctuary.
