Client: City of Beloit
Location: Beloit, WI
Scope: New 18,500 sf facility
The arts-and-crafts style of the new Beloit Fire Station blends itself with the adjacent residential neighborhood. The cruciform plan allows for three separate areas that function effectively and efficiently:
West Wing – Provides information hub with the front entrance, reception and offices.
East Wing – Provides rest area for ten firefighters with sleeping areas, rest rooms and showers.
North Wing – Provides kitchen with attached patio, dining area, day room and an 1,150 square foot exercise/training room.
At the core of the fire station is a five bay apparatus room. Included in the design is a separate mechanics bay allowing for internal maintenance of equipment and a 1-ton bridge crane for removing engines and lifting equipment onto one of two mezzanines used for mechanicals and storage.
Glass block at the top of the apparatus bays add a special feature to this fire station. During the day, radiant light shines into the station, reducing the need for electrical lighting. At night, the glow from the glass block gives an unobtrusive presence in the neighborhood.
